Being bi-racial was just something I never really focused on."

"When I came to America, I didn't fit in at all," he continued. "At all! Not only was I biracial, but I wore holey jeans and rock & roll T-shirts. I was content with the fact that I didn't fit in."

Jeter said that as a kid, he and his sister were taunted for being biracial and this ignorance had continued even after he'd been drafted for the Yankees. He recalled an incident during his visit back to his hometown in Kalamazoo,Michigan when someone called him the "n" word. "

"It was disappointing because I was very proud of the fact of what I was able to do, you know, I am living my dream," he said. "Come back, see my friends for the first time, and… you still had to deal with ignorance."
